Police open Weinstein probes
Police in London and New York are investigating sexual assault allegations levelled at US film producer Harvey Weinstein.
In a week that has rocked Hollywood, the movie mogul has been accused of sexual harassment and assault from some of the film industry’s biggest names including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Beckinsale.
Actress Rose McGowan returned to Twitter after a 12hour suspension of her account with claims Weinstein raped her, clarifying previous statements she had been sexually assaulted by an unnamed studio head.
Merseyside Police in Britain said it received a report on Wednesday morning of an alleged sexual assault in London in the 1980s and has referred it to Scotland Yard.
The New York Police Department is investigating the 65year-old and will determine if there are additional complaints.
Weinstein also faces three allegations of rape by three women in an article in The New Yorker. His spokeswoman has said “any allegations of nonconsensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein”.
British actor Emma Thompson said she was not surprised about the allegations.
“They are endemic to the system anyway,” Thompson told the BBC. “What I find extraordinary is this man is at the top of a very particular iceberg. He’s a predator. What he is top of the ladder of is a system of harassment and belittling and bullying and interference.”
Fellow British actress Sophie Dix claimed Weinstein had pinned her down in a hotel room in London when she was 22. “He started trying to pull my clothes off and pin me down and I kept saying ‘No, no, no’,” Rix told The Guardian about the incident at London’s Savoy Hotel in 1990.
Earlier, Weinstein said “I’m not doing OK” and “we all make mistakes” as he was filmed on camera for the first time since the scandal broke. “I’ve always been loyal to you guys (reporters). Not like those f...ing pricks that treat you like s...,” he said.
The producer is now thought to be at a rehabilitation centre.
McGowan, one of the first actresses to be named as an alleged victim, is calling for the board of the Weinstein Company to be dissolved.
After a 12-hour Twitter suspension she tweeted: “jeffbezos I told the head of your studio that HW raped me. Over & over I said it. He said it hadn’t been proven. I said I was the proof,” she wrote to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos.
