A South West couple has been fined more than $150,000 for deliberately underpaying eight staff up to thousands of dollars each over 15 months.

The penalty was handed down by the Federal Court for Gemma and Mark Gumley and their company Koojedda Carpentry Pty Ltd.

They were found to have underpaid eight workers a total of $20,000.

The court found the pair guilty of 14 contraventions of industrial law, ranging from underpaying minimum wage, as well as casual loading, overtime as well as weekend and public holiday penalties.

It found that five of the eight workers were not paid their wages at all during weeks of employment, while one worker was not paid for her 21⁄2 weeks on the job. One employee aged 19 was paid less than half of her lawful entitlements.

The couple had previously been fined for not paying six staff their leave entitlements in 2012.
