Magic of Rotto enthrals Aladdin stars
Aladdin the Musical stars have picked up some showbiz tips from the humble quokka. Ainsley Melham (Aladdin),
Gareth Jacobs (Genie) and
Shubshri Kandiah (Princess Jasmine) ventured over to
Rottnest Island on their day off and tracked down one of the marsupials to capture a “quokka selfie”.
Melham joked the critters were true professionals in front of the camera.
“They were really obliging,” the WAAPA-trained performer told AAA with a laugh.
“We thought we would have to walk around and find the quokka and I thought it would be like this whole stealth mission, but they were really lovely and friendly.
“Obviously you try to be respectful and not freak them out but we even managed to get a few where he looked like he was smiling.”
Melham said it was a treat to be able to relax on the island during their rest day.
“We had been talking about it for quite a while, so it was definitely on our to-do list,” he said. “I have been before when
‘We make it our mission to go out and I’ve been showing some of the cast around.’
I was here studying at WAAPA and I was keen to get back.
“Funnily enough, Shubshri grew up in Perth but had never been, so I was like, ‘we have to get over there because it’s part of being a Perth local’.” Now halfway through the acclaimed WA season of Aladdin at Crown Theatre — it continues until October 28 — Melham has enjoyed being reacquainted with Perth.
He said his explorations showed how much the city had changed since he was a student here, while visits to Kings Park and small coffee shops gave him a sense of nostalgia.
“We make it our mission to go out and I’ve been showing some of the cast around,” Melham said. “Little day trips on the weekend and excursions makes our time here really enjoyable — it breaks up being in a dark theatre five days a week.”
