A Murdoch University marine scientist who uses drones and artificial intelligence to monitor dugongs is one of 10 finalists in the running for a $1 million prize from tech giant Google.

Dr Amanda Hodgson’s Dugong Detector surveys these aquatic mammals to learn more about seagrass habitats, which are vital to the survival of this and many other species.

“If the seagrass disappears, so do the dugongs,” Dr Hodgson said.
