BEST STORIES IN THE WEST
THE Western Downs region had a special visitor last Tuesday, albeit only briefly.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is in the middle of a whirlwind election campaign across Queensland, with the media tracing her every step.
Yet the state’s leader found time to drop by the council offices to chat with deputy mayor Andrew Smith and chief executive officer Ross Musgrove.
Cr Smith said he was grateful to spend time with the Premier.
“(Ms Palaszczuk’s team) called us to say the Premier would be stopping in for a brief visit. It wasn’t a media occasion but it was a visit,” Cr Smith said.
“So we had the opportunity to sit with the Premier for 20–30 minutes.”
Cr Smith said the conversation was focussed on the key issues for the region, particularity jobs.
“Initially we thanked the Premier for the Works for Queensland program.
“We obviously welcomed her to our region and made it clear that we are always welcoming of the Premier of this great state,” Cr Smith said.
“We then outlined to the Premier what’s important to our region. We also outlined our economic diversity, which we believe is the secret to our success.
“We explained to her that it’s really all about jobs, so any help to any of the industries in our region that create jobs would go hand in hand with what council try to do.”
