This tour of the mighty Mur­ray River cul­mi­nates in a lux­ury pri­vate sa­fari in the moun­tains of the Flin­ders Ranges.

This fully guided trip takes in food, wine, cul­ture and wildlife. Led by the re­gion’s most ex­pe­ri­enced na­ture guide, your jour­ney starts where the mighty Mur­ray River meets the ocean, where in­land in­hab­i­tants like Cape Bar­ren Geese and Koalas live along­side South­ern Right Whales (sea­sonal view­ing avail­able in Aug-Oct). Up­stream, you’ll stay at a beau­ti­ful bush­land re­treat, en­joy din­ner un­der the stars and search for charis­matic South­ern Hairy-nosed Wom­bats. Fi­nally, you’ll ar­rive at the Flin­ders Ranges, home to the lux­u­ri­ous Ark­aba Sta­tion. Here you’ll be wined, dined and travel sa­fari-style through a pri­vate sanc­tu­ary span­ning hun­dreds of square kilo­me­tres.

Itin­er­ary:

Day 1-2 Start­ing in Ade­laide, this tour heads south to Goolwa on the Mur­ray to dis­cover an­cient abo­rig­i­nal camps and on to Vic­tor Har­bour where South­ern Right Whales can be viewed (Aug-Oct). Cape Bar­ren Geese, Koalas and wa­ter­birds make this their home. From there, we drive to an 80 acre pri­vate re­serve in the Ade­laide Hills where we spend day 2 ex­plor­ing the prop­erty, birdwatching and tast­ing wine. The day ends with a spec­tac­u­lar sun­set din­ner on the banks of the Mur­ray River fol­lowed by spot­light­ing for South­ern Hairy-nosed Wom­bats.

Day 3-5 Fol­low­ing the Mur­ray River up­stream, through the Mallee and Clare Val­ley wine re­gion we will wind our way up into the spec­tac­u­lar Flin­ders Ranges. Wildlife high­lights in­clude Yel­low-footed Rock-wal­laby and the many na­tive birds, ex­tra­or­di­nary rock for­ma­tions and desert colours. Three days will be spent in lux­ury at Ark­aba, ex­plor­ing hun­dreds of square kilo­me­tres of coun­try­side in an open-top Land Rover.

Day 6 On the fi­nal day, you’ll head slowly back to Ade­laide stop­ping in to see Abo­rig­i­nal cave paint­ings and coastal mud­flats har­bour­ing thou­sands of mi­gra­tory wa­ter­birds (in sea­son).
