As digital subscriptions grow strongly, newspaper audiences prove to be heavily engaged online users across a range of verticals
Latest figures from the Audited Media Association of Australia (AMAA) show that 2.5 million readers had a digital newspaper subscription in Q1 2014. Digital subscriptions overall more than doubled compared to the same period in 2013 (+129%).
Digital subscriptions for weekday editions of The Age, The Australian and The Sydney Morning Herald had year on year growth of 132%. These newspapers are the first for which year on year comparisons are possible, so their figures are a leading indicator of how other publications will fare as further comparisons become possible.
Many newspapers have yet to start charging for digital content. As they do, the ranks of digital subscribers will continue to grow.
