Some 9.8 mil­lion live in ma­jor metro ar­eas and make up the most con­cen­trated area of news­pa­per read­ers.

Na­tional and met­ro­pol­i­tan news­pa­pers pro­vide the na­tion with com­pre­hen­sive, in-depth cov­er­age of ma­jor na­tional and in­ter­na­tional sto­ries.

On av­er­age, 9.3 mil­lion Aus­tralians read a na­tional or metro news­pa­per ev­ery week, or 53 per cent of the pop­u­la­tion.

Some 59 per cent of ev­ery­one liv­ing in city lim­its read ei­ther a na­tional or metro daily. On an av­er­age week­day, 4.2 mil­lion read their favourite pa­per. This to­tal rises to rises to 4.4 mil­lion over the week­end.
