A BUG’S LIFE
There’s been speculation for a little while, but on 13 September, VW announced the end of its beloved Beetle, as the brand moves to being a “full-line, family-focused automaker.” Yes, this announcement comes from the US of A. The Beetle had already been removed from VW’s British brochures, but the news from across the pond confirms the car’s passing worldwide after 80 years. Memories of free love and hippy living overshadow the Hitler-commissioned 1938 reality, and they’ve shaped even the latest generation, which arrived with a dashboard vase awaiting a plastic flower. We’ll miss the Bug but, let’s face it, it was about time it got squashed.
