Had you read The Little Broomstick before you started this?

I was not familiar with it before I got the part in the film. My dad read it a couple of weeks ago, and he filled me in on the story. I think it’s really great how they’ve adapted lots of things to make the film its own and make it original.

Were you a Studio Ghibli fan?

I’ve loved Ghibli films since I was little. Howl’s Moving Castle, that’s a huge one for me. Spirited Away is amazing and, of

course, Arrietty and When Marnie Was There I also found really touching.

How did you relate to Mary?

Everyone tells me I’m very independent! When

I was reading it, I really connected with Mary. If I saw that flower, I would pick it! There is no way I would leave that there. I would pick it straight away!

What was it like seeing your voice added to the animation?

It’s quite weird! When I started off, it was really new and really weird. On The BFG that was me on screen. But with Mary, she has red hair and is completely different looking. I’ve got used to it now. JM
