In one of the greatest uncertain endings in cinema, young lovers Dustin Hoffman and Katharine Ross flee from her wedding, jump aboard a bus, and race to the back, where they sit, smiling, contemplating their future together. Slowly, the smiles begin to fade, Paul Simon’s sinister-sweet guitar trickles in, and with that devastating opening line (see below) we start to wonder about their Happy Ever After too.
