Although it was 1975’s Alive! that lit the blue touch paper, we feel that Alive II, with a set enriched by material culled from an intervening trio of truly classic studio albums is the ideal introduction. The likes of Ladies Room, Makin’ Love and Black Diamond are genre-defining slices of 70s stadium rock and even the more restrained, country-flavoured Hard Luck Woman deserve attention. The lyrics skirt the boundaries of modern PC tolerance. Despite the wonderful riff, it won’t take Inspector Morse to identify the weapon Paul Stanley is lasciviously referring to during Love Gun. Christine Sixteen features a great Ace Frehley solo embellished by a Mu-Tron Octave Divider, but you may well find your gorge rising come the nth repeat of the frankly scandalous chorus. Standout track: Love Gun
