MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA

A BLACK MILE TO THE SURFACE

Total Guitar - - MONITOR -

For the follow-up to 2014’s guitar-heavy

Cope, the Atlanta alt-rockers have turned off the distortion pedals and drawn upon their recent experience in film soundtracking to rethink their entire approach to the use of six-strings in the band. The results are deeply layered and cinematic in scope, but there’s still plenty of dextrous picking from Andy Hull and Robert McDowell, most notably on The Gold’s slick scalic riff and show-stopping ballad The Parts. Sonically, this is a big departure, but still rooted firmly in Manchester Orchestra’s earnest songwriting tradition. Michael Astley-Brown Download The Grocery
