Rockschool: Fleetwood Mac – Albatross
Try out a classic blues tune and hone your finger slide and vibrato technique in Rockschool’s easy Grade 2 arrangement
Albatross was a huge hit for Fleetwood Mac and it features blues great Peter Green alongside a young Danny Kirwan playing harmony guitar, plus drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John Mcvie.
Green had followed Eric Clapton as guitarist with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers but, despite Green’s blues credentials, this tune is not a vehicle for widdly improvisation. Focus instead on following the melody and staying in time with the backing track.
Rockschool’s arrangement is based on Green’s lead guitar part. The track has been shortened to be appropriate for the Grade 2 Rockschool exam – nevertheless, the main details are featured. Note the slides in bar 10. On the original recording these are string bends, but every guitarist should be able to rethink subtle ideas like this.
You can also experiment with vibrato. Push and pull the string up and down in tiny steps to ‘wobble’ the note – an expressive effect that sounds sweeter than letting the string ring out.
