The Great Untold
The great trick of Scott Matthew’s sixth album is to seem both expansive and inventive, yet intimate and expertly crafted. The plugged and picked electric of Lawlessstars positions the Wolverhampton songsmith somewhere between Bon Iver and Buckleys Tim and Jeff – the latter recalled in Matthews’ stunning, assured vibrato – before morphing into a construction of slide-lilted tranquility. Silence echoes Dylan’s Layladylay in its bleary-eyed comfort and quietude. Cinnamon, meanwhile, captures something of the crisp intricacy of fellow Novello awardwinners, The Leisure Society. All told, a somewhat pensive treat.
