Vibrato (2012)

Total Guitar - - BACK TRACK -

5 Gilbert changes tack here, veering towards avant-garde jazz in places, and it’s a fascinating transformation that sees him playing with a style far looser and a tone much gnarlier than he’d hitherto opted for. There’s more than a whiff of Frank Zappa pervading the kooky Bivalve Blues, set to a throbbing Hammond organ and lyrically empathising with a lonesome mollusc, and its undulating feel is in contrast to the stomping title track, the latter coated with all manner of ring modulation. Atmosphere On The Moon is beautifully controlled and Rain And Thunder And Lightning is a lesson in spiralling improvisation; and there are live covers of the Yes stalwart Roundabout and AC/DC’S Go Down too.

Recommended track: Atmosphere On

The Moon
