Peter Buck’s trademark techniques

Total Guitar - - ARTHUR BUCK -

Peter Buck’s distinctive, jangling rhythm style was a key part of REM’S sound, from their emergence on the alternative rock scene in the early 80s until their eventual split in 2011. One of the true greats at creating memorable parts with a bare minimum of notes, Peter Buck’s carefully understated, minimalist style hooks the listener in whilst also offering us guitarists a valuable masterclass in songwriting as well as riff writing.

Buck’s trademark Rickenbacker 360 is at the core of his tone, but you don’t have to own one to get close to his style of playing. Just make sure you plug into your amp’s clean channel, select your bridge pickup and roll off a little of your guitar’s tone to keep it sounding sweet. Have a go at our tab examples and get a little bit of Buck magic in your own playing.
