Rockschool: Free – Wishing Well
Build your rhythm skills with the riffs, chords, doublestops and arpeggios in Rockschool’s easy arrangement of this Free classic
One of Free’s most succesful singles, Wishingwell is a classic song with a strong riff and it’s easy to play if you’re following Rockschool’s Grade 1 arrangement. The opening riff is based on an important building block of pop and rock, the E minor pentatonic scale (the notes are E, G, A, B and D) and the guitar part uses a mixture of these.
Following some chords, in bar 12 of the tab you’ll be playing a two-note shape (aka a doublestop). It’s a quirk of the guitar that sometimes playing fewer notes can sound more powerful than bigger chords. Perfect for bands without a keyboard player or second guitarist filling out the sound. In bar 16 the tab switches to arpeggios and in bar 19 the open sixth string adds weight to the sound. You’ll need to pick carefully here – so practise slowly to get these arpeggios down.
As regards tone, dial in a medium gain sound and, if you are using a digital modelling amp, make sure that you use a Marshall model to attain an authentic result.
