The joy formidable
Ritzy Bryan and co have clearly spent some time considering the risks of laurelresting. As such, their fourth record eschews their dream-pop-gone-alt-rock formula, taking the dial marked ‘mad, psychedelic’ and cranking it five notches to the right. The Wrong Side wrestles skittish Whammy-wranglings into a marching rocker, while Cicada (Land Onyour Back) melds sitar-sounds with grinding Muse-y grandeur and Dance Of The Lotus’s thundering pedal abuse recalls Omar Rodriguez-lopez. It sometimes feels a bit ‘kitchen sink’ in approach – Ritzy’s ’board must be heaving – but joyfully experimental and refreshing all the same.
