As the Arctic Monkeys recently rounded off their 2018 UK tour with their new album Tranquility base hotel & casino in tow, we thought it would be timely of us to take a look at one of their biggest riffs, RU Mine. Although it’s fairly easy, take particular care on those big fretboard leaps – they can throw out your timing.

Metallica are soon to reissue a 30th anniversary deluxe edition of …And Justice For All, so we were inspired to look at James Hetfield’s odd time album opener Blackened as the second of our video riffs.

The riff is (mostly!) based in 7/4 time with accented offbeat eighth notes. Count ‘1 & 2 & 3 & 4& 5 & 6& 7&’ and emphasise the ‘&’s to get the feel. A helpful hint: Lars Ulrich’s snare hits land on the ‘&’s. Note that we’ve stayed in standard tuning for convenience.

Finally, this month marks the anniversary of the tragic passing of Tom Petty, and we’re looking at the uplifting riff from one of his best-loved tracks, Free Fallin’. The magic comes from Petty and Mike Campbell’s layered guitar parts.

Read on and all will become clear.. .
