WILD CARD Land Speed Record (1982)
6 Mould once said of Hüsker Dü’s early days that they “needed to be the fastest band in the world,” and on this debut they certainly give it the old college try, battering through 17 songs in just over 25 minutes during an amphetamine-fuelled live show. This is messy, no-holds-barred hardcore punk in the same vein as early Bad Brains or Minor Threat, with none of the carefully-crafted nuance that would come to define the band in later years. You’re Naive is like a light-speed rendition of Dead Kennedy’s Life Sentence and Push The Button savages Cold War-era fears, though there’s little to tell these songs apart. A gloriously blunt object, for those who like that sort of thing.
