they learn multiple roles for every show

“We generally learn four to five different roles in one ballet. That covers any injuries that might occur and it also gives everyone a chance to perform something that’s in the spotlight. It’s quite hectic during the rehearsal period. In this year, I learned about seven roles. A lot of the time we have to do what we call homework, which is to go home and learn some stuff off the DVDs because at one point you never know when you may be asked to perform a particular role especially when injuries are concerned. They can happen on the spot and you may have to jump in.”
