Townsville Bulletin - Townsville Eye - - FEATURE -

I’ve been here for most of my life. I was 13 or 14 when I got my first bike. I’ve always had one since then. This one’s made up of a few bits; I’ve had it for about 40 years. it’s raced on the speedway here in Townsville. I bought it off Trevor Denman, who was the guy who raced it. I’d always wanted one. They were very expensive in their day and very hard to come by. They were the fastest motorbike. They held the land speed record and just about every speed record there was. They used them a lot on the speedway, and for road racing. They cost twice as much as other bikes. They were more hand-built but they were very expensive to produce. They made only 10,000 from 1946-1956. I wanted one because it was fast, not so much these days. I worked in telecommunications but I was more interested in mechanics. I do all my own mechanical work, unfortunately! This is the first time I’m doing The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. I’m going to have to find something to wear. Paul said, “Just wear a white long-sleeved shirt,” and I said, “I don’t own one,” and he said, “Well, wear a tie!” and I said, “I don’t own one!”
