2012 LIMITED EDITION TRIUMPH
A few years ago I built a full replica of the bike that Steve McQueen ( pictured) rode in The Great Escape, which was a 1961/62 Triumph modified to look “Germanised”. Steve McQueen rode it like a bat out of hell, and it became quite famous. The tank is off that one at the moment, it’s getting a paint job. This bike is one of 30 that came to Australia, 1100 were made in a batch, it’s a limited edition replica and they are very hard to get. I got my name down and had to wait for it and I managed to snick one. It’s number 14 of the 1100. Newer bikes generally lose their value, these have gone up. For The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, bikes are supposed to be vintage but they can also be modern classics, so that’s what this is. The bike is a commemorative thing for 50 years of the movie, I’ve changed it slightly because I use it. I’ve ridden it to Brisbane three times. It’s not just to look at, it’s to use. A lot of motorcycle devotees know about them. I’d like a dollar for every time the movie pops up on TV. I’ve been riding motorbikes all my life, I got my licence at 17, I didn’t get my car licence until the year later.
