Q& A WITH JULIE

Townsville Bulletin - Townsville Eye - - GARDEN -

Hi Julie, I have this tree in my backyard in Townsville. It’s two years old, 6m tall, and has leaves 25-30cm wide. Can you please ID? From Bob.

It is Macaranga tanarius from the Euphorbia family. Common names include Kamala, Nasturtium tree and heart leaf. It is a fast-growing pioneer plant with a trunk that seldom exceeds 30cm at 1.4m above the ground/below first fork. Leaves are characteristically peltate, with the stem attached near the centre of the underside of the leaf rather than at the margin and at one end. Also sap from broken twigs turns pink or red on exposure.
