Q& A WITH JULIE
Hi Julie, could you help with the name of this tree/shrub? It’s growing in my neighbour’s yard. They have small children and want to know its name and if it’s poison or not as they have recently bought the house and are not from North Queensland. I think I have noticed the fruit will ripen to an orange colour. Many thanks, Bev from Annandale.
This appears to be a Native Brown Gardenia (Atractocarpus fitzalanii) that grows to a bushy shrub or small tree to about 5m tall. The 8cm diameter fruit ripens to a dull yellowish colour and apparently the flesh inside the hard outer coating is quite edible and delicious – but I have never tried it.
