EASY PEASY CHEESY TREATS
Cheese is a great treat for dogs and most will wolf it down if given the chance. However, some dogs are lactose intolerant so make sure you monitor your dog’s reaction when feeding them cheese for the first time. Also opt for a low or reduced fat variety as many cheeses are high in fat, and feed in moderation as too much can cause your dog to have an upset tummy.
These two easy recipes use low-fat cottage cheese and ricotta cheese to make yummy and healthy treats.
EASY COTTAGE CHEESE BALLS INGREDIENTS
2/3 cup low fat cottage cheese 6 tsp milk 6 tsp olive oil or coconut oil 1 egg yolk 2 cups rolled oats
Preheat oven to 180C and line an oven tray with baking paper. Mix all ingredients and form small balls with your hands. Place balls on lined oven tray and bake about 30 minutes or until edges are golden brown and the balls are firm. Remove from oven and cool on a rack.
RICOTTA AND SPINACH BISCUITS INGREDIENTS
3½ cups oat flour 1 cup ricotta cheese ½ cup thawed, frozen spinach (drained well on paper towels) 1 egg ½ cup skim milk or water
Preheat oven to 180C and line an oven tray with baking paper. Mix the egg, spinach, and milk together in a blender or food processor, then mix in the ricotta, and finally, the flour a cup at a time until just combined. Knead on a lightly floured board for about a minute, then roll out to 1520mm thickness and cut into biscuit shapes using a cookie cutter. Prick lightly all over to prevent the cookies from fluffing up too much during baking, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until firm and the edges are golden brown. Remove from oven and cool on a rack.
