SLEEK PONY TAILS AND GLAM WAVES MAKE FOR A PHOTO FINISH

Townsville Bulletin - Townsville Eye - - BEAUTY - WORDS: AMBER MAC P HER SON

Here’s a secret straight from the horse’s mouth: a day at the races doesn’t require half a day doing your hair. While it’s tempting to go all out and style your glorious mane to the nines, the outdoor elements can undo all that hard work in a heartbeat. Hair stylist Travis Bandiera shares his top three long-wear looks:

THE HIGH SLICK PONY

Travis says this is a classic style that can easily be paired with a bird cage veil or headband fascinator. All you need is a snag-free hair band, a holding spray product and a couple of bobby pins. “This is a racing style that will never go out of fashion and it will last all day,” Travis says. “Simply slick your hair back as tightly as possible securing with a snag-free elastic. Once your desired result is achieved, wrap a fine piece of hair from the ponytail around the base of the elastic and secure with a bobby pin.”

THE MODERN HALF UP-HALF DOWN

A look made famous by Kendall Jenner, it can be worn with no part or parted through the middle. You’ll need a smoothing product, holding spray and hair clips or bobby pins. “This modern twist on a classic style is a perfect way to dress up your hair for the races,” Travis says. “Apply a smoothing product such as Project Sukuroi from O&M and use a a blowdryer to smooth out your hair completely to allow for a slick and smooth finish, especially through the top sections of the head. Next, tuck hair behind each ear, spraying each section very lightly. Secure the style with a hair clip or large bobby pin in the crease of where the ear starts.”

VINTAGE WAVE

Channel the beach while you’re firmly on land with this wavy style that looks great on long or short hair. Switch on the heating wand, pull out the shine spray and — you guessed it — a couple of bobby pins. “Start by curling your hair with curling tongs, ensuring that each section is curled in the same direction,” Travis says. “Take small sections and work through the hair. Once curled, allow hair to cool down then brush the curls out with a wide-tooth comb or soft brush, finishing with a spritz of shine spray. Tuck hair behind one ear and secure with a bobby pin. For an extra hint of glamour, this style looks great with a deep side parting.”
