Q& A WITH JULIE

Townsville Bulletin - Townsville Eye - - Garden - JULIE ROACH

Hi Julie, Firstly when do you plant gladioli bulbs in Townsville? Also my paw paw trees look like the sap has drained out of the top and the leaves at the top go yellow, even the young trees. I fertilise and water. I don’t want to lose them as they are delicious. HELP. Cheers Peter.

A: It sounds like bunchy top virus. It is usually spread by sap-sucking insects and it can be transferred on pruning tools as well. Unfortunately there is no cure … although fruit may still be set. As for planting gladiolus, they can be planted now. It will take 70 to 90 days from planting until flowering. For a continual harvest of flower spikes, plant a few corms every two weeks until early summer. GOT A GARDENING QUESTION? WANT TO IDENTIFY A PLANT? ASK JULIE!
