Red Cross looking for blood boost over summer
TOWNSVILLE’S Blood Bank needs your help to maintain a sufficient blood supply this festive season.
One in 30 Australians currently give blood, yet one in three Australians will need blood at some time during their life.
Townsville Australian Red Cross Blood Service Liaison Officer Bruce Muller said more blood donations were needed over the festive season.
‘‘We usually see a spike in road accidents around this time of the year, so we have been calling on people to play Santa Claus and at the end of the day they could save lives,’’ Mr Muller said.
According to the Red Cross blood donations this year are quite low compared to last year.
Mr Muller said blood had a ‘shelf life’ and some key blood components like platelets only lasted five days.
The Red Cross’s latest initiative is the Summer Blood Boost which targeted groups around Townsville to donate blood.
Eleven groups have signed up for the Summer Blood Boost which will last until February.
WHK-TCMSmithis one of the eleven groups and marketing manager Paul Fotinos said over 40 staff members donated blood yesterday.
