Townsville Bulletin - - Front Page -

THE man accused of leading the unprovoked gang bashing of two Vietnam veterans last August, Daniel John Howe, will face a three-day committal hearing on May 14 next year.

Howe, who is in custody at Stuart, did not appear when his matter was mentioned in court yesterday.

Howe was arrested in connection with the brutal assault on veterans Laurie Ballinger and Mike Marr outside Tom’s Tavern on August 3 this year.

He was the subject of a city-wide manhunt when he later assaulted and escaped a police guard during a hospital visit. He was recaptured three days later.

Both veterans suffered multiple injuries. Mr Marr had several operations.
