THE ABC building in the Brisbane suburb of Toowong will be abandoned without knowing the cause of a high incidence of breast cancer cases among women staff members.

An investigation by a review panel was conducted after 12 women were diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 11 years.

Eight of the women worked in the newsroom and most had been there for more than five years.

The study showed women who worked at the office reported breast cancer at a rate 11 times higher than the general working community.

ABC boss Mark Scott said this was an ‘unusually high incidence’ when compared to the general population, but the panel was unable to find any link to the work environment or t e c h n o l o g y i n u s e at the site.
