Military families thankful for support of community

Townsville Bulletin - - Just Briefly -

THIS has been a busy year for us all. The Australian Army continues to be engaged in operations in many parts ofthe world.

Townsville soldiers have served with distinction in Iraq, Afghanistan and in the Pacific in 2006. I am proud to command such a professional and dedicated group ofmen and women.

Wherever they serve, they are fine ambassadors for Australia.

I would like to thank the people ofTownsville for their cont i n u i n g s u p p o r t o f o u r servicemen and women, and of their families, particularly while we are serving overseas.

Service families experience periods ofseparation in the course oftheir lives and the support ofthe broader community, especially at Christmas, is welcomed and important to them.

This year has also brought tragedy and loss to the Townsville Army family. Only a few weeks ago, we lost Captain Mark Bingley in a tragic helicopter accident in Fijian waters.

I acknowledge the warm and generous way that the people of Townsville have opened their hearts to his family and colleagues at this difficult and sad time.

Christmas is a special time for us all. I wish you all the compliments ofthe season and a happy and prosperous 2007 and thank you again for your support of the army, our members and their families during 2006. GENERAL PETER LEAHY

ChiefofArmy
