Animals kept in apartment
AHONGKongwoman who kept 113 pets — including dozens of cats, hamsters and turtles — in stacked cages in her apartment has been arrested for cruelty to animals, police and newspapers said.
Police found 31 cats, 26 turtles, 13 birds, 10 dogs, 32 hamsters and a rabbit — all kept in identical blue cages in the flat, which was no bigger than 450 square feet, the Ming Pao Daily newspaper reported yesterday.
Officers forced their way into the flat and found the animals after neighbours complained that the apartment smelled foul, the paper said.
The rank smell came from a dead hamster and the animals’ faeces, it said.
The 52-year-old woman has been released on bail of $US514 ($A656.41) police said.
