An­i­mals kept in apart­ment

AHONGKong­woman who kept 113 pets — in­clud­ing dozens of cats, ham­sters and tur­tles — in stacked cages in her apart­ment has been ar­rested for cru­elty to an­i­mals, po­lice and news­pa­pers said.

Po­lice found 31 cats, 26 tur­tles, 13 birds, 10 dogs, 32 ham­sters and a rab­bit — all kept in iden­ti­cal blue cages in the flat, which was no big­ger than 450 square feet, the Ming Pao Daily news­pa­per re­ported yes­ter­day.

Of­fi­cers forced their way into the flat and found the an­i­mals af­ter neigh­bours com­plained that the apart­ment smelled foul, the pa­per said.

The rank smell came from a dead ham­ster and the an­i­mals’ fae­ces, it said.

The 52-year-old wo­man has been re­leased on bail of $US514 ($A656.41) po­lice said.
