Ethanol on fast track
LOTUS has developed what it claims is the world’s quickest road-legal car to run on bio-ethanol fuel. The Exige 265E can roar from 0-100km/h in just 3.88 seconds. The prototype has been designed with the environment in mind and runs on bio-ethanol E85 fuel. Lotus’s team chose ethanol because it allowed them to enhance the engine performance and it produces more power than conventional fossil fuel. It features the same supercharged and intercooled four-cylinder engine found in the Exige S, but this model generates 21 per cent more power and 16 per cent greater torque, with 197kW at 8000rpm, and 249Nm of torque at 5500rpm.The head of Powertrain for Lotus Engineering, Geraint Castleton-White, says the 265E was made to prove that green sportscars don’t have to lack in performance. ‘‘The fact that we have produced a research version of the Exige that is more powerful than the standard road car is a testament to the benefits of going green,’’ he says.‘‘It also promotes bio-ethanol as a fuel of choice for the enthusiastic driver as well as the environmentally conscious driver.’’ But Lotus says there are no plans to bring the car into production any time soon.
