IT must be Christmas. Here we are saying nice things about Coles and Woolies. Banana buyer for the big chains, Tony de Luca, was saying the other day that the likes of Woolies and Coles have taken only the tiniest of profit margins on bananas since Cyclone Larry decimated the industry on March 20. Rather than snatch the massive profits for themselves they have given nearly all of it to the growers who were able to supply fruit. His words were, ‘‘The chain stores did the right thing. They took only the smallest margin. Actually I don’t know how they did it.’’ So, there you go. Underneath that flinty retail exterior beats a heart of mashed banana.
