No hams for staff

Townsville Bulletin - - Talk Of North -

BUT the one that blew everyone away was the Christmas ham affair. Cr Clarke moved that Christmas hams be given to all council staff members. After all, he said, staff had worked seven days a week, six weeks straight after the cyclone. Many of them had lost their homes or had homes damaged, but they turned up for work, day in, day out. The kicker was that hardly any staff demanded overtime or penalty entitlements for working in rain, mud and trying conditions. The savings to ratepayers amounted to more than $200,000. One staff member could have collected $32,000 in overtime, but didn’t put in a claim. Two councillors opposed the motion, saying staff didn’t deserve the hams. They were Cr Mauloni and Cr Dave McCarthy. The hams, by the way, cost $6500 in total.
