Mid­dle East tour for To­bruk

THE am­phibi­ous ship HMAS To­brukhas set sail for the Mid­dle East to sup­port op­er­a­tions in the trou­bled re­gion.

Af­ter mak­ing a stop in Fre­man­tle, West­ern Aus­tralia, HMAS To­bruk­will sail to the Per­sian Gulf to pro­vide as­sis­tance to op­er­a­tions in the Mid­dle East and Afghanistan.

The ship’s mis­sion will be to de­liver Aus­tralian mil­i­tary stores and equip­ment, which will be air­lifted into Afghanistan by the United States Air­force.

It will also bring Aus­tralian equip­ment home from the Mid­dle East.

Speak­ing at To­bruk’s farewell at Gar­den Is­land in Syd­ney Har­bour, the Navy’s Mar­itime Com­man­der, Rear Ad­mi­ral Davyd Thomas, said he had ‘ev­ery con­fi­dence’ the crew mem­bers would ‘per­form their du­ties to the high­est of stan­dards dur­ing this mis­sion’.

The To­bruk­will re­turn to Aus­tralia in March next year.
