Musical career finds right key

Townsville Bulletin - - The Guide -

LIFE

is pretty good for Mick Makin’s old friend and fellow musician Anna Weatherup. After 12 months living in Brisbane she couldn’t be happier with the way her musical career is going ahead — but she still has time to remember where she came from.

Anna was back in town last night for a one-off show with Mick at The Metropole — her old stomping ground — and has made a point of returning north every couple of months. ‘‘(Playing with Mick) is fun, definitely,’’ she said. ‘‘Mick’s got a good judgment on music, a good repertoire, style, choice of songs and rhythm.

‘‘I came up for a Magnetic Island gig in June and since then we’ve played weddings and weekend gigs at The Metropole.’’

Despite a hiccup involving a forgotten bag on that occasion, Anna relished the chance to come back to Townsville to play.

‘‘It’s not difficult at all, it’s great actually . . . you get to come back and visit friends,’’ she said.

But her career in Brisbane has taken off with regular gigs in the popular Fortitude Valley and a recording on the way in the new year. ‘‘I had it set up from the beginning,’’ she said. ‘‘I scored a jobin a coffee shop in (Fortitude) Valley. I’ve met so many people including musical connections, it’s been a great help.’’

Working in hospitality has fast-tracked Anna’s networking in the city and has made her many invaluable friends.

‘‘Because I can’t stop talking I’ve met a lot of people just having a chat over the counter. When you’re in hospitality you just talk,’’ she said. And 2007 holds many great things for Anna. ‘‘I’ve got a friend helping me out (with the recording) and when he’s back in the new year we’ll get stuck into it,’’ she said.

‘‘There’s also talks of travelling around Australia.’’
