Night swim is not advisable

Townsville Bulletin - - Nye — Party Central -

AMIDNIGHTdipmay sound temptingafter a few New Year’s beverages, but surf lifesavers have urged revellers to be aware of the dangers of swimmingin the beach at night.

SLSQ’s lifesaving services manager George Hill said surf lifesavers were particularly worried about the combination of alcohol and a nighttime swim.

‘‘There are no lifesavers patrollingthe beaches at night, so if you get into trouble, there is no immediate help available, and any search is almost impossible in the dark,’’ Mr Hill said.

‘‘We cannot become complacent as we want to ensure the festive period is as safe as possible for everyone who visits the beach this summer.’’

Volunteer beach patrols will start at 10am.
