THE SOUND OF NO HANDS CLAPPING By Toby Young Penguin $32.95

❏ TOBY Young has made a great success out of proclaiming himself to be a failure. His first book, Howto LoseFriends&AlienatePeople, based on his failure to make a success of working in New York sold well and was made into a play, a radio series and, potentially, a film. This second novel depicts his failure to become a Hollywood screenwriter and his retreat to home to England and a career as a freelance journalist and author. So the premise that he’s a failure looks pretty tatty.Add to this his relentless self-promotion, his serious character flaws which inspire him to embarrass himself and his friends at every opportunity and the whole package is pretty unattractive. In a word: Distasteful
