Family ‘ kept prisoner’ in Kelso home by gang

Townsville Bulletin - - News - Alexis Gillham

A FAMILY was ‘‘ held hostage’’ in their Kelso home last night after being threatened by five carloads of would-be assailants.

A gang of 15, reportedly armed with a baseball bat, threatened Wayne Rossow, his wife and four children at their Barbara St home last night in retaliation to being kicked out of a private party there on the weekend.

An angry Mr Rossow said he had clashed with the group on Saturday night when they turned up uninvited to his son’s 21st birthday. He said the mixed-sex gang had arrived after midnight, punched his son and attacked other guests.

‘‘ By the time police arrived they had gone, so police said there was nothing they could do,’’ Mr Rossow said.

He said police had previously told him they feared for their own safety in dealing with the large gang. He said the group had again retreated when they saw police last night.

‘‘ There were about five cars full of them,’’ he said. ‘‘ They didn’t cross the boundary of our property so the police didn’t do anything. I couldn’t go outside my property because this is basically giving them permission to assault me. My castle is becoming a prison.’’

Police confirmed they had attended both incidents.

‘‘ Police arrived at the outof-control party on Saturday night and asked the uninvited group to move on,’’ a police spokeswoman said.

‘‘ They went to the same address ( tonight) and told the group to move on, which they did.’’
