Townsville Bulletin - - News -

INGHAM was last night cut off by floodwaters for the third time this year after days of heavy rain.

The Bureau of Meteorology was expecting the Herbert River to reach the major flooding level of 11 metres late yesterday, inundating lower levels and cutting the Bruce Highway to the north and south.

‘‘ That’s if it stays at the level they are talking about, if it goes any higher we’ve got a problem,’’ Mayor Pino Giandomenico said. ‘‘ They’re saying it’s going to keep raining for a couple of days so we’ll probably be cut off for a couple of days.’’

Cr Giandomenico said it was the third time the town had been cut off by floodwaters this year and it would be a setback to efforts to move on from Cyclone Yasi.

Heavy rain has been falling across the region for days with more than 100mm of rain recorded in parts of the Herbert River catchment in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday.
