Fury’s fate known today
THE North Queensland Fury will know its fate today after Football Federation Australia boss Ben Buckley flies in to alert the local board of its decision on whether the club will survive beyond 2011. According to FFA sources, Mr Buckley’s news will not be positive, despite the Fury’s fantastic effort over the past three months to raise $ 2 million to keep itself afloat. Soccer Queensland chief Geoff Foster has written to Mr Buckley, a last-minute plea to keep the North Queensland franchise alive. He has warned that the effect of losing the Fury would be felt in Queensland for many years. The problem for the FFA is that the North Queensland club continues to leak money annually, even with the Fury’s strong sponsorship and corporate support. Former Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr, in a front page article, warned 12 months ago that Townsville may not be a big enough city to sustain four national sporting franchises. With the Fury and Townsville Fire women’s basketball on life support, he may well be proven correct.
