Keep on giving
CLAIMING the government’s $ 1000 cyclone disaster funding has been a thorny problem for many. I didn’t claim it because I didn’t think I deserved it. But one reader, puzzling over the same problem, came up with a novel solution. He decided he could spend the money better than Julia otherwise would, so he claimed it and donated it to those who really do need it. As well as that, he worked out that if he’s paying, say, 30 cents in the dollar tax he can declare his donation and get a refund of $ 300. Then he’ll get a refund on that $ 300 too, this time $ 90, which he can re-invest and get another refund. At that point he reckons he can spend it on a nice bottle of bubbly.
