New Zealan­ders yes­ter­day ob­served two min­utes’ si­lence, one week af­ter the Christchurch earth­quake

AN el­derly Aus­tralian woman has be­come the sec­ond Aus­tralian to die in Christchurch’s deadly 6.3-mag­ni­tude quake, the Depart­ment For­eign Af­fairs and Trade ( DFAT) has con­firmed.

‘‘ With deep re­gret, we can con­firm there has been a sec­ond Aus­tralian death as a re­sult of the Christchurch earth­quake,’’ a DFAT spokes­woman said.

‘‘ This sec­ond Aus­tralian was an el­derly woman who lived in Christchurch with fam­ily for a num­ber of years.’’

The spokes­woman said the depart­ment had ‘‘ held grave con­cerns for her wel­fare for some time’’.

‘‘ As authorities have not for­mally con­firmed ei­ther of the deaths, we can’t pro­vide fur­ther de­tails at this stage.’’
