UNITED IN GRIEF
New Zealanders yesterday observed two minutes’ silence, one week after the Christchurch earthquake
AN elderly Australian woman has become the second Australian to die in Christchurch’s deadly 6.3-magnitude quake, the Department Foreign Affairs and Trade ( DFAT) has confirmed.
‘‘ With deep regret, we can confirm there has been a second Australian death as a result of the Christchurch earthquake,’’ a DFAT spokeswoman said.
‘‘ This second Australian was an elderly woman who lived in Christchurch with family for a number of years.’’
The spokeswoman said the department had ‘‘ held grave concerns for her welfare for some time’’.
‘‘ As authorities have not formally confirmed either of the deaths, we can’t provide further details at this stage.’’
