Floodwaters dangerous

Townsville Bulletin - - News -

WITH more wet weather expected in coming days, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is urging people not to enter floodwaters. Firefighters have been called to several swift-water rescues in the North over the past month and are frustrated at the community’s lax attitude during the wet season. Northern Region Assistant Commissioner Ron Twomey said it was vital all residents kept out of floodwaters. ‘‘ People underestimate the danger of waters, thinking they can make it through. This sort of attitude is foolish and people can, and have ended up paying with their lives,’’ Mr Twomey said. ‘‘ Floodwaters can be lethal and their currents can be deceptive. What appears to be a shallow, placid body of water can turn into a raging floodway in seconds.’’
