Dig­gers, Afghan forces cap­ture in­sur­gent leader

AUS­TRALIAN and Afghan troops have cap­tured an in­sur­gent com­man­der who led a con­tin­gent plant­ing deadly im­pro­vised bombs in part of Oruz­gan prov­ince.

T h e u n n a me d T a l i b a n leader was de­tained dur­ing a com­bined op­er­a­tion in­volv­ing the Aus­tralian troops and Afghan Na­tional Se­cu­rity Forces in mid-Fe­bru­ary, but news of the op­er­a­tion did not emerge un­til yes­ter­day on the Depart­ment of De­fence’s web­site.

De­fence said in­tel­li­gence pro­vided by the Spe­cial Op­er­a­tions Task Group al­lowed A u s t r a l i a n a n d A f g h a n troops to in­ter­cept those at­tend­ing an in­sur­gent ‘‘ shura’’ or meet­ing.

Afghan forces and Dig­gers con­ducted a cor­don and search op­er­a­tion in the area l i nk­ing t he Baluchi and Chora val­leys.

De­fence said they de­tained a num­ber of per­sons of in­ter­est, who were taken to the Aus­tralian de­ten­tion fa­cil­ity at Tarin Kowt.

‘‘. . . one of the de­tainees was iden­ti­fied as an in­sur­gent com­man­der from the Baluchi IED ( im­pro­vised ex­plo­sive de­vice) cell, re­spon­si­ble for a num­ber of Afghan and coali­tion ca­su­al­ties.’’
