Hosts fail to lift Os­car rat­ings

CO-HOSTS James Franco and Anne Hath­away failed to lift rat­ings for the 83rd an­nual Academy Awards.

The Sun­day cer­e­mony, which crowned The King’s Speech Best Pic­ture, drew 37.6 mil­lion view­ers–down 9 per­cent from last year.

For view­ers aged 18-49, the num­bers were down 12 per­cent,

Dead­line re­ported. The worst rat­ing Os­cars in re­cent years was the 2008 cer­e­mony, which drew just 32 mil­lion view­ers.

Fol­low­ing the cer­e­mony, a num­ber of crit­ics ham­mered Franco and Hath­away, with the

Or­lando Sen­tinel call­ing the show a ‘‘disas­ter’’ and Movie­ com­ment­ing that the whole thing was ‘‘ bor­ing’’ and ‘‘pro­duced hor­ri­bly,’’ re­ported. CBS re­ferred to nu­mer­ous skits by the rookie hosts as ‘‘unin­spir­ing’’ and The Hol­ly­wood Re­porter noted that the host­ing duet was ‘‘ spec­tac­u­larly bad’’–par­tic­u­larly Franco.

‘‘ This year, the Os­cars hit a new low,’’ it said.
