Hosts fail to lift Oscar ratings
CO-HOSTS James Franco and Anne Hathaway failed to lift ratings for the 83rd annual Academy Awards.
The Sunday ceremony, which crowned The King’s Speech Best Picture, drew 37.6 million viewers–down 9 percent from last year.
For viewers aged 18-49, the numbers were down 12 percent,
Deadline reported. The worst rating Oscars in recent years was the 2008 ceremony, which drew just 32 million viewers.
Following the ceremony, a number of critics hammered Franco and Hathaway, with the
Orlando Sentinel calling the show a ‘‘disaster’’ and Moviefone.com commenting that the whole thing was ‘‘ boring’’ and ‘‘produced horribly,’’
FOXNews.com reported. CBS referred to numerous skits by the rookie hosts as ‘‘uninspiring’’ and The Hollywood Reporter noted that the hosting duet was ‘‘ spectacularly bad’’–particularly Franco.
‘‘ This year, the Oscars hit a new low,’’ it said.
