Waratahs faced with task of containing Sonny Bill Williams

Townsville Bulletin - - Sport -

THEY won’t be starting any fights with him but Waratahs players say they’ll need to swarm all over Sonny Bill Williams to knock down the giant centre in his debut for the Crusaders on Friday night.

Williams is set to return from a foot injury – and a short stint in profes- sional boxing – by being named for the powerful Kiwi franchise in their side to play NSW in Nelson.

The Waratahs will have to without one of their key players, however, after Berrick Barnes was ruled out with concussion. His place will be taken by Daniel Halangahu.

Williams was picked for the All Blacks last year after playing for Canterbury in the NPC but, if selected, it will be SBW’s first game in Super Rugby.

NSW inside centre Tom Carter will mark SBW and said the key will be replicating the Tahs’ aggressive de- fence against the Reds last week.

‘‘ We have our own strategies in place and we just have to defend as a unit,’’ Carter said.

‘‘ That’s the key, you can’t defend in isolation otherwise they will punish you. I won’t be starting a melee with him.’’
